What is a lunar calendar and what is it for?
A lunar calendar is a way of calculating the passage of time according to the cycles of the moon and not the sun, as most calendars in the world do. The lunar calendar is made up of lunations and each lunation corresponds to a lunar month. This means, each period between two moments when the moon is in the same phase.
The lunar phases are produced by the interaction between the movements of the sun, the moon and the earth. In this sense, a lunar calendar serves to know the different phases of the moon on each day of the year, among other things such as the distance and its position with respect to the earth, as well as to explain different phenomena such as tides.
Currently the lunar calendar helps to fix some church dates such as Easter, but it also has other uses. Here we tell you what they are.
Uses of the lunar calendar
The lunar calendar is directly related to the menstrual cycle, because it has the same duration of each lunation and also because it occurs with the phases of the moon.
The lunar calendar also serves to work in the garden tasks such as horticulture, gardening, arboriculture and agriculture. Specifically, the lunar calendar is useful for knowing when to sow and harvest; when to prune, treat weeds, etc.
Other related areas that work in harmony with the phases of the moon are beekeeping, viticulture, winemaking, beer distillation, cider, and forestry. And as if that weren't enough, too, the moon has influences on haircuts, waxing, treatments, and food.
